A very light pair of wheels indeed, though feeling in side winds can be a little on the scary side, especially group riding on longer rides – if you’re on the nervous side in groups then you might be best avoiding these.

The rims can be prone to brake rub quite easily though they do hold onto speed well with a comfortable ride, apart from the side winds they are a good wheel, good braking and quality of ride. £1700.

The FFWD Fast Forward F6R Wheels are 58mm deep and seemingly similar to the likes of some Zipp and HED sections though the scale is narrower.

FFWD calls its rim shape Darc, this is the narrowness from the inner spoke section to the braking surface, and claims to reduce wind drag. The hubs are very smooth and sealed well; they are laced with the brilliant CX-Ray spokes from Sapim, these wheels are very straight, they performed well on climbs. On even the steeper climbs they don’t actually feel as heavy as they are, dealt well with the side winds an all round good ride. RRP £1014.99.

Best used with 23mm tyres these carbon clincher wheels can certainly help you improve on times, compared to light standard wheels they can feel a little sticky on the climbs but descending feels very controlled and smooth.

The overall ride is good, the 50mm deep sectioned rims performed well in gusts of wind. Working well together Hed and Bontrager’s aim to create a decent clincher aero wheel combined with the 23mm tyre seems to have worked, the Aeolus 5.0 is a worthy investment of £1649.98.

If you have £1099.98 to spare then SRAM fail to offer anything special with these S40’s, they feel somewhat on the sluggish side, climbing and sprinting felt laboured whereas handling did not feel altogether controlled or comfortable, with rim depth at 39mm they are not the deepest or even lightest of Aero wheels, the S40’s just seem to be left wanting. It does seem unusual for SRAM, they are not terrifically disappointing wheels but for the price you can do better.

If you just have one bike to carry and want to carry it on the car roof then the Avenir Utah 1 Bike Roof Rack will do the trick.

The aluminium channel should fit most tyres, but is a little shorter than others. The base is plastic and allows some sideways movement though the channel and arms are strong, the supporting arm is also held in place by the front fixing through a small plastic bracket.

The difference to most is that the arm does not clamp to the down-tube, instead it clamps to the raised crank, and this allows the stationary wheel to be used to prevent any movement, preventing damage to delicate tyres and tubes. The clamp can be locked but a very tight fit between the down-tube and cranks. £69.99

Fresh from a successful three weeks racing in the Tour de France, Olympic Gold Medallist Geraint Thomas is now looking forward to sharing his experience with cycling fans and hitting the iconic streets of De Ronde in Belgium.

Geraint, who spent the first six days of the Tour de France wearing the white jersey and was the top British rider in the overall standings, will be hitting the cobbled lanes of Belgium in August giving cyclists the opportunity to learn from a professional or simply wheel alongside him as they tackle the routes made famous in the Tour of Flanders.

The 25-year-old Welshman, with London 2012 gold medal ambitions, said: “This was my third Tour de France and although tough, it has been my most enjoyable tour so far. I’m really excited about sharing my knowledge and experience with cyclists of all abilities in Belgium – we’ll be following in the tyre tracks of cycling icons!”

The Tour of Flanders (also known as Ronde van Vlaanderen) was first raced in 1913 and is considered to be one of the world’s hardest single day events, as well as one of the ‘Five Monuments of Cycling’.

Thomson Sport offers the exclusive three day tour – De Ronde with Geraint Thomas – from £869pp including three nights 4* accommodation on half board basis (17th – 20th August 2011), return luxury coach travel from Manchester, Birmingham or London, a full CNP Professional sports nutrition package during each ride, a professional cycling coach to offer advice and support throughout, a tour of the Centrum Ronde van Vlaanderen Museum with cycling legend Freddy Maertens, a Q&A session with Geraint Thomas, post-ride meals, secure bicycle storage, two 12×8 professional photo prints in a commemorative folder and a unique ‘De Ronde with Geraint Thomas’ goody bag.

For more information call Thomson Sport on 0845 121 2018 or visit www.thomsonsport.com

Campagnolo Neutron Ultra Wheels have asymmetrically drilled holes in the rear wheel and all the spokes enter the non-drive side, (though the drive side spokes are thicker), achieving lateral rigidity for those hugely energetic sprints and uphill accelerations.

The carbon and aluminium hub bodies are laced with straight pull spokes giving a total weight of 1529g, the fitting of tyres can be a little tricky but the end result is a very firm but full on responsive wheel. Coming with maintenance booklet and wheelbags, at £649.99 the Neutron ultras are worth every penny.
