Chain Reaction have knocked £££’s off the Colnago Ace Veloce 2010 in a mega sale on this superb road bike.
The task: a bicycle for riders who need a more comfortable riding position, but still want Colnago ride quality and control. The answer: Ace.
A full carbon fiber one-piece frame gives ultimate strength and integrity for a lifetime. Our new Real X geometry with 20mm longer head tube makes for a less aggressive position for comfort in sportive and gran fondo events.
Carefully tuned geometry and laser-guided carbon fiber lay-up produce true Colnago ride and handling; fast, accurate and exciting.
Dependable Campagnolo Veloce components keep you rolling through all conditions.
Ergonomics:
As the popularity of granfondo and sportive events has grown in recent years, a new type of rider has come to road cycling. Without a lifetime of acclimatisation to a tucked riding position, these riders are not comfortable on a traditional road racing bicycle, but they still demand and deserve a superb ride.
With our new Real-X geometry, Colnago provides sportive riders with a more upright and less aggressive riding position. By extending the head tube 20mm on our Ace model, we give a riding position that’s better suited for enjoying the scenery, while maintaining the legendary Colnago handling, stability and ride safety.
Having a more upright riding position puts less strain on the rider’s shoulder and neck, allowing them to achieve a perfect position and still enjoy the legendary Colnago ride.
Frame Design:
The perfect bicycle must be balanced. It must be made to fit you, not the other way round.
Balanced handling is vital too. Colnago invented modern bicycle racing geometry and has refined it to perfection with handling that is unwaveringly accurate but stable at speed, so a long day in the mountains is a battle against the gradient and your rivals, not against a twitchy bicycle.
Colnago ride quality is rooted in the idea of balance too. A frame must be stiff, to convey your power to the road, but it must not be harsh. Features like our 3PRS internally-ribbed tubes and over-sized chainstays with leaf-shaped seatstays simultaneously improve rigidity and dissipate road shock.
Frame integrity is a crucial aspect of Colnago design. Our frames and forks are tested in the Colnago Lab to withstand impacts far beyond international standards, and to retain their strength after impact. That means your Colnago can still be ridden to the finish if the worst happens.
We’re always looking for ways to improve our frames. New ideas start with Ernesto Colnago’s sketches, and then computer-assisted design, finite element analysis, and rapid 3D prototyping allow us to test new ideas in days. Tomorrow’s Colnagos are already on the drawing board.
Headsets:
In a top-quality bicycle, everything turns on the headset. It must be smooth for accurate handling, and it must be durable for thousands upon thousands of hard kilometers.
The Colnago C-HS semi-integrated headset is a new introduction for 2010 that reduces weight, improves the looks of the bicycle and makes maintenance easier, with none of the disadvantages of some integrated systems.
At Colnago, we refused to use the early integrated headsets as they swept the bike industry. We liked the clean lines, but we were not prepared to risk the integrity of the frame by mounting a bearing directly into the head tube.
The C-HS system uses an aluminium cup to hold the bearings and in our carbon fiber frame we maintain the all-important integrity of the carbon head tube with an aluminium sleeve.
This system is available in two versions. The EPS uses the C-HS1 headset has a a 1 1/4in lower bearing. This allows the use of a tapered fork steerer and larger head tube, increasing the rigidity of the EPS by over 20 percent for more precise handling.
The C-HS2 with 1 1/8in bearings top and bottom is used on our other carbon fiber and aluminium bicycles.
Design & manufacturing:
It starts with experience. From over 55 years of building bicycles for the world’s best cyclists, we know that a racing bicycle has to be stiff, light, accurate-handing and above all safe. Our frame designs balance these factors while taking advantage of the latest advances in materials and construction to create uncompromising, state-of-the-art bicycles.
From computer-aided designs, we work with our composite suppliers to create the unique molds for our EPS lugs and for frames like the CX-1 which have one-piece front triangles. Only by controlling every aspect of the design and manufacture of these vital parts can we make a carbon composite frame that lives up to the Colnago badge.
EPS frames are still fully manufactured in Cambiago, while other carbon frames come here for the all-important finishing and painting steps. Even our more affordable complete bicycles go through rigorous quality control before they’re shipped to your dealer.
Our special paint process creates stunning-looking bicycles. Rather than use decals that fade and peel, we create our colour panels with paint, carefully masking areas of the frame in a multi-step process. It takes longer, but the result is a frame that looks as good as it rides, and that will stay looking good for years.
Alfa carbon
To achieve both stiffness and light weight, our alfa carbon process combines a one-piece molded front triangle with bonded chainstays and seatstays.
The carbon lay-up is tailored to each bicycle to give the correct ride qualities for its purpose. We also select the particular grade of carbon used to keep bicycles like the CLX 2.0 and Ace affordable.
For the CX-1 and CLX 2.0, the carbon lay-up has different thicknesses in the areas where most torque and stress are found – such as the bottom bracket and head tube areas – to ensure better stiffness, power transfer and handling.
Alfa carbon allows us to tune the ride in other ways too. The CX-1 and CLX 2.0 use curved seatstays to improve braking and handling under braking. The CX-1 uses rectangular oversize chainstays for maximum rigidity and precise tracking, while the CLX 2.0 adopts the classic leaf-shaped chainstay used on the EPS.
To keep alfa carbon frames light it’s necessary for the use of materials to be as efficient as possible. Carbon composites need only a minimal amount of resin to hold the fibers together. To minimise the amount of resin we use pre-impregnated carbon fiber cloth, aligned by laser and cured under very high pressure. This eliminates voids to reduce weight and increase strength.
All alfa carbon bicycles go through the same tough design and crash-testing process as our EPS and steel models. They dramatically exceed CEN standards.
